High speed MaxCap550 supports OM4 connectivity specifications to extend link distances in next generation 40G and 100G data center networks.

BICSI, Orlando, FL January 18, 2009 – Draka Communications, a global leader in the optical fiber industry, announces that its multimode product MaxCap550 is currently fully compliant with today’s OM4 fiber specifications, meaning that it can already meet requirements for the next generation of data centers and server farms.

Draka is already able to conform to OM4 specifications with its multimode MaxCap550 fiber, putting it in the forefront in replying to industry requirements for cable that can extend link distances in next generation data communications networks.

MaxCap550 was a result of further optimizing Draka’s patented PCVD production process* by identifying a sub-group with superior characteristics enabling 10 Gb/s over 550 meters. OM4 fibers are specified with an increased effective minimum modal bandwidth of 4700 MHz.km at 850 nm (compared with 2000 MHz.km for OM3). In addition, for system safety and backwards compatibility, extra margins of overfilled launch (OFL) bandwidth specification (minimum 3500 MHz.km at 850 nm and 500 MHz km at 1300 nm) are maintained.

“Draka is excited to be a part of the working committee that is shaping up future standards to meet fast emerging data communications demands, and that the industry is using our specifications as a benchmark, “ said Jack Rosko, Product Manager Private Networks, Draka Communications.“ Draka’s MaxCap550 is the most accurately specified next generation multimode product available today, offering customers lowest risk connectivity to meet their needs.”

Data networks demand more bandwidth
Higher grade OM4 multimode fiber can be used in several applications such as backbone connections in Local Area Networks (LAN), Data Centers as well as interconnections inside telecom central offices. OM4 multimode fiber is ideal for 10G link applications requiring a higher power budget, for example when more connectors are required, which is the case in Data Centers. They are also perfect for 10G applications requiring a longer distance than 300 meter (up to 550 meter). Finally, they are future proof, especially for 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s Ethernet solutions, currently under development by IEEE802.3ba, where an extended distance version is considered up to 250 meter using OM4 multimode fiber above the currently agreed 100 meters. Currently, Fiber Channel is considering using OM4 multimode fiber for its high speeds solutions.

* Draka has invested heavily in high-quality qualification procedures in some cases introducing additional proprietary quality features in its fiber characterization programs. In addition Draka’s MaxCap300 and MaxCap550 (OM3 and OM4) fibers are more tightly specified than required by present standards and compared to several other comparable products. Both have to fulfill DMD as well as EMBc requirements, which minimize customer risks.

Draka Communications
The evolution of fiber optic technology through new manufacturing techniques and processes is revolutionizing data networks as they steadily progress towards 10Gb/s applications and upwards to 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s Ethernet solutions. The agreement on a new 10 Gb/s Ethernet standard in 2002 accelerated the production of a new breed of
high-bit-rate 50 µm core diameter multimode fiber for short-distances (up to 300 meters) to provide lowcost high-speed connectivity. This fiber, standardized in 2002, is known as OM3 fiber. Draka was one of the first manufacturers to respond to these market needs.
